Labor Overview: Stories From around the World

Ok so I'm a bit lazy today so I think rather than write my own stuff I'll just link to other stories. Here they are, with headlines (I would say enjoy, but there's not much enjoyable here):

OSHA leaves worker safety in the hands of industry (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/25/washington/25osha.html?hp)

Why reward murderers? Passing an FTA with Colombia says, 'Go ahead and kill union organizers'

EDUCATION-IRAN: Ahmadinejad Flunks on Teachers' Strike
McDonalds Digs Deep & Gives Farm Laborers a Penny Raise

A two year campaign by Immokalee Workers to receive a $.01 increase per pound of tomatoes. Farm workers were receiving $.40-.45 per 35 pound satchel. With the one cent increase workers will receive 72 to 77 cents for the same amount. In 2005 farm laborers reach a similar agreement with Taco Bell after a nationwide boycott brought Taco Bell an unwanted amount of bad publicity.

Despite McDonalds' resistance to the one cent increase they have said that the hike in pay will not cause an increase in the cost of a burger.

Geneva, Switzerland
APRIL 3, 2007

In a strongly-worded decision made public today, the International Labour Organization (ILO), an agency of the United Nations, issued an unprecedented call for the United States to “promote the establishment of a collective bargaining framework in the public sector in North Carolina,” and called specifically for the repeal of North Carolina General Statute § 95-98, the state law that prohibits public employee collective bargaining.

Circuit City leading the way in worker morale

Circuit City has begun layoffs of 3400 employees who make too much money. In order to cut cost Circuit City will be laying off 3400 employees who Circuit City says are paid above the market based salary range for the positions. In a move to show that Circuit City is not the cold-hearted, money hungry, only caring for the bottom line & investors company that they are, Circuit City has told employees who were fired that they can reapply for their jobs at the new, lower pay rate.
