Basically Beethoven Festival
The Fresno Philharmonic began its 2007-2008 season on Friday, June 15, 2007 with “Intoxicating Energy,” the first segment of the “Basically Beethoven Festival” being held from June 15-17. The festivities began outside the Saroyan, where folks sporting their Philharmonic-going attire sat at tables eating German Potato salad and listening to polka music at a “German Beer Garden.” It was a slightly surreal start that Beethoven would enjoy. In fact, Beethoven certainly seemed to enjoy himself as he mingled amongst the potato salad with beer in hand. Perhaps he was taking an extended stay in the present compliments of the time traveling phone booth from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I didn’t think to ask, but in my brief conversations with Mr. Beethoven – fortunately in English, albeit with a German accent – he confirmed that be would be attending Sunday’s concert as well.
The Philharmonic’s ambitious festival presents three concerts, each featuring different works. Friday’s beautifully moving and rhythmic offerings splendidly showcased the Philharmonic with their guest artists (Ellen DePasquale, Violin; Desmond Hoebig, Cello; and Derek Han, piano), each fantastic in a piece that would have seemed challenging to time. Violin, cello, and piano whispered and danced back and forth through their concerto against the backdrop of the Fresno Philharmonic, concluding with an enthusiastic standing ovation. Though the evening’s pieces will not be performed again over the course of the weekend, the three guest artists are performing Saturday evening with Philharmonic Maestro Theodore Kuchar at Fresno State at the “Intimate Encounters” concert of chamber music – the quartet is sure to be fantastic. Han will return to the Saroyan’s piano to join the Philharmonic for Sunday’s “Heroes and Triumph” concert as well. I’m certain that Beethoven will approve, but you can ask him yourself in the Saroyan lobby before the concert on Sunday!
