Bakersfield Documentary Making Waves
Posted May 14th, 2008 by NoveltownAs usual, I will give the Fresno Undercurrent more of the exclusive than other area community media sites:
I'm not sure if the Bakersfield Californian newspaper is going to slam my documentary, "The Last Band," but they're launching an article on Thursday that includes a discussion of the film.
The half-hour ABC documentary discusses some of the attitudes about history, music and cultural reverence for Buck Owens former recording studio where Korn recorded their first album and country greats like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Buck Owens once recorded...
Women on the Edge, writing from the edge
Posted September 23rd, 2007 by NoveltownAre women writing from the edge in Fresno, California? Women in Los Angeles are. Women on the Edge Writing from Los Angeles is a collection of short stories that captures the beauty of what it is to be a woman. And that story links the contributing women authors and characters to women everywhere out on the edge, which is life.
Brian "Head" Welch, formerly of Korn to sign books in South Valley
Posted July 25th, 2007 by NoveltownI thought I'd share that Brian "Head" Welch will be in Bakersfield Aug. 1 since that's the closest to Fresno he's getting on his book tour.
He's signing copies of his memoir, "Save Me From Myself" which made the top 20 on the New York Times Best Seller list after just one week in book stores.
I'll be writing a review of his memoir for both ABC 23 in Bakersfield and Noveltown...
Minnesota travels, books and memoirs, and a question about trash
Posted June 16th, 2007 by NoveltownI've just written a social criticism after traveling to Minnesota about some of Bakersfield's trash problems. Do any Fresno areas have the same problems?
Anyway...
We've got some new book discussions on Paperback Writer: On Memoirs: Matildakay talks shop.
Bakersfield loses another music scene icon: Slim the Drifter
Posted May 29th, 2007 by NoveltownNot long ago, Buck Owens died and mainstream country music was in mourning. His passing was along the lines of Johnny Cash's death. I remember attending a country music gala at the Crystal Palace Dinner Theatre in Bakersfield when Buck unveiled a statue of Johnny Cash. He walked up to it and touched it as if fondly remembering a friend.
In the underground country scene, Bakersfield has few remnants, and few living legends. One started out in punk rock years ago, eventually drifting into country music. His name is Slim the Drifter. His music haunted Bakersfield and LA bars for years.

LA Kings promote roller hockey in Central Valley
Posted May 23rd, 2007 by NoveltownThe LA Kings came into the Central Valley recently to show their support of a new roller hockey facility opening up in Bakersfield.
I know there's some good hockey fun in Fresno (I love the hate the Falcons).
Anyway, there's more:
The Kings are having a two-day Inline Summer Camp in LA August 25-26, which is only $75 and includes 4 Kings game tickets... Click for more info...
